SUMMARY:Get Out & Vote!
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE \nMental Health Europe is hosting the 5th edition of the European Mental Health Week between 13-19 May 2024\, under the theme “Better Together: Co-creating the Future of Mental Health”. \nAccording to the last Eurobarometer survey\, 89% of European citizens consider mental health as important as physical health. Co-creation is a collaborative approach involving all\nactors in mental health working together on an equal basis to develop and implement policies\, services\, programmes\, and communication that foster positive mental health according to a psychosocial model and human rights-based approach. \nMental Health Europe calls for co-creation as a path of transformation\, moving away from systems where non-participation and tokenism are the norms\, towards one which is based on collaboration\, partnership\, and true understanding of needs. Co-creation – applied in policies\, practices\, research and communication- has the potential to bring us closer to our vision of societies that promote positive mental health for all\, intervene early when problems develop\, and provides accessible\, comprehensive and community-based mental health services for those who need them. Therefore\, if we want to have an EU that acts for what matters to those residing in Europe\, it is essential to co-create the future together and go to vote\, to ensure we have a say in the building the society we want. This year’s EMHW is in line with the EU Elections\, which will be taking place in June 2024. As part of the week\, we will be organising an LinkedIn event focusing on mental health and co-creation in view of the upcoming European elections in 2024. \nMental Health Europe will be joined by The European Parliament Partnership Team and The Good Lobby \nRe-Watch the Event\nEP Elections\nThe Good Lobby\n

SUMMARY:Shared Experience and Local Mental Health Systems
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE \nThe SE&LMHS project assumes that mental health is not only a matter for special services but should include the whole local community. Several activities beneficial for mental health can be created by working together in the community in peer-to-peer contexts through direct relationships between professionals\, service users\, carers\, the third sector and representatives of the local community. These activities can be very different and can vary according to the local contexts. They have nothing to do with diagnostic systems and are not an extension of services. \nMental health services should not only follow the clinical approach currently dominated by the biomedical model and DSM/ICD nosographic categories. This approach\, useful in specific and limited circumstances\, risks instead damaging/colonizing the communities themselves by stripping them of their natural resilience mechanisms\, when extended inappropriately out of context.  Services should also be open to the social and cultural perspectives of the communities in which they operate and should play an important role in promoting collaborative activities with all key stakeholders present in those same communities. The roots of the project are based in Florence and Prato (Italy); in a context where psychiatric hospitals were being closed and the local community was becoming one of the main players in mental health. A transition from the clinical to the community environment has been – and continues to be – most important to organize better services and better communities. The Watford experience will be presented as a development of the original Italian project in the British context. \n  \nJoin the presentation

SUMMARY:No Health without Mental Health! Let’s Co-create a Mental Health and Wellbeing Toolkit.
DESCRIPTION:HYBRID \nThe rare disease community has highlighted the lack of holistic support from medical services\, where their physical health needs are met but not their psychological and emotional needs. The United Nations recognises this and calls for effective programmes\, promoting mental health and psychosocial support\, to be implemented through enhanced psychologically informed medical care. \nThis session will start a co-creation process to develop a new Mentally Healthy Toolkit for the rare disease community\, by exploring the existing approaches and tools\, that have worked in the rare disease community\, to drawn on these tools form the basis for a new Toolkit. As well as providing concrete policy solutions that can support the implementation of the UN commitment into national healthcare systems. \nThe Mental Health Session\, that takes place as part of EURORDIS’ European Conference for Rare Diseases\, will draw on and explore existing psychosocial approaches and tools to test their applicability\, transferability and scalability for other rare conditions and communities. \nAt the close of this session\, participants are expected to be able to: \n– Build the awareness and understanding of the impact of rare diseases on mental health and on the risk and protection factors that influence our mental health and wellbeing. \n– Leverage the insights gained from existing psychosocial approaches and tools to alleviate mental health challenges associated with rare conditions for both the individual and the family\, to include in EURORDIS’ Mentally Healthy Community Toolkit. \n– Identify recommendations to policy makers and the new European Parliament to develop psychologically informed medical care\, that support the UN’s call for Mental States to establish psychosocial support for PLWRD and their families. \nRegistration can be made via the following link: \nRegister

SUMMARY:Youth Courage Final Conference: Mental Wellbeing of Young People in the Aftermath of COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:HYBRID \nYouth Courage project has been a KA2 project funded by Erasmus+ and targets marginalised young people who have lost access to key support systems due to the Covid-19 pandemic and seek to reconnect by focusing on the mental well-being of young people in Europe. The project aims to support and reintegrate these young people\, while providing youth work professionals with appropriate tools. The project offers modern\, future-proof ways to (re)connect with marginalised young people who have lost contact with their support system in times of crisis. It empowers adolescents and marginalised young people to become active citizens\, to take responsibility for their own physical and mental health and aims to promote their personal development through solidarity and civic participation. It provides innovative survey tools to capture the current situation of marginalised youth and their caregivers in transnational reports to further strengthen the link with policymakers and research centres across Europe. \nOn 15 May 2024\, the project will host the final conference\, running till lunchtime\, where the policy paper will be presented to the public and with stakeholders. The website of the project shares further details. In this final conference\, project partners will share the lessons learned throughout the project\, and representatives of diverse stakeholders will be invited to draw attention to the mental wellbeing of young people from different perspectives\, with the main focus on the effect of the Covid-19 on marginalised young people. A specific anxiety will be given to climate anxiety which is an emerging issue as well recognised among young people in Europe. \nRegister Here\nAgenda

SUMMARY:How to get co-creation right in mental health research
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE \nUndeniably\, co-creation approaches in mental health research are needed to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and what is actually happening in people’s lives. But how is co-creation applied in current research practices? How do Horizon Europe projects ensure that the design and implementation of their co-creation processes benefit their co-creators as much as it benefit them? And what learnings and best practices should these big projects apply moving forward? \nJointly organised by 7 huge EU Horizon Europe projects on ‘Mental Health in Times of Change’\, this webinar will delve into fresh and first-hand experiences involving practitioners and people with lived experience as co-researchers/ co-creators. SUMMARY:How do you do co-creation in mental health?
DESCRIPTION:Watch this event again\nPeople have the right to participate in decisions and processes which affect them\, and there is a growing demand for the systematic protection of this right for people with lived experience of mental health problems. People with lived experience have had few opportunities to participate in creating policies and services that meet their needs\, and when they are involved\, they are listed under ‘acknowledgments’\, not ‘co-authors’. They are denied an opportunity to own these policies and services\, despite their having a direct impact on people’s mental health and well-being. \n  \nMental Health Europe defines co-creation in mental health as “a collaborative approach involving all actors in mental health working together on an equal basis to develop and implement policies\, services\, programmes\, and communication that foster positive mental health according to a psychosocial model and human rights-based approach.” \n  \nCo-creation must be the standard. Co-creation benefits people with lived experience by reducing stigma and discrimination related to mental health\, promoting self-efficacy and self-esteem\, increasing mental health literacy\, and making sure that their real needs are taken into account. At the same time\, it makes mental health systems more effective and accessible by \n\nenabling more effective forms of support for people experiencing mental ill health\nincreasing the availability and value of interventions to prevent mental health conditions and promote well-being.\n\n  \nBut how is it done? How can you do it? \n  \nThis European Public Health Week\, which coincides with European Mental Health Week\, WHO Regional Office for Europe and Mental Health Europe are hosting a webinar exploring this question. Over 1.5 hours\, people with lived experience\, public health professionals\, and experts will examine co-creation from the ground up\, asking what it takes to start\, and more importantly\, how to keep it going. \n  \nJoin us on 14 May at 10:00–11:30 CEST \nRegister Now\nDowload the Agenda

SUMMARY:Mental Health: People at the Centre
DESCRIPTION:IN PERSON \nHow often is health policy shaped by the voices of the people themselves? Probably less so when it comes to people with lived experiences of mental health difficulties. This event provides a platform for the people who know what is needed through their experience and what needs to change\, and to discuss openly the challenges they face and the opportunities for connection\, collaboration\, and co-creation. We aim for an open dialogue around mental health as a basic human right and a public health issue\, which requires a coordinated effort at all levels of society to tackle the stigma and improve access to quality care and community support. \n  \nCypsa
