SUMMARY:Mental Health and Homelesness: a vicious cycle of powerlessness
DESCRIPTION:Mental health is a fundamental human right – essential to well-being\, community participation\, and the ability to live with dignity. Yet\, for people experiencing homelessness\, this right is too often denied. During this European Mental Health Week 2025\, our session will explore the powerful\, often invisible connections between homelessness and mental health problems\, highlighting how structural inequalities\, unmet needs\, and social exclusion create a vicious cycle of powerlessness and marginalisation. \nDrawing on international data and practical examples\, we will unpack the cascading effects of homelessness on mental health – including increased risks of untreated psychiatric conditions\, cognitive impairments\, and substance use – as well as the systemic barriers that hinder access to care. These include bureaucratic obstacles\, lack of outreach\, fragmented services\, and negative attitudes from professionals. \nThis event invites participants to reflect on the urgent need for inclusive\, rights-based mental health systems that do not leave the most vulnerable behind. Together\, we will ask: How can we transform mental health care to not only help people survive\, but enable them to truly live? And what actions are needed – in policy\, practice\, and public attitudes – to uphold mental health as a social right for all?

SUMMARY:Unleashing the Power of Multidisciplinary Collaboration for Better Mental Health: lessons learned from exploring and implementing cross-sectoral mental health competency framework
DESCRIPTION:Mental health does not exist in isolation – it is shaped by social conditions such as poverty\, inequality\, employment\, and education. The EU-PROMENS Project\, funded by the EU4Health programme\, is an initiative aimed at strengthening the capacity of health professionals across Europe in the field of mental health to deal with those challenges through promotion of multidisciplinary approach. The project focuses on multidisciplinary training and knowledge exchange\, ensuring that professionals – from healthcare providers to educators and social workers – are equipped with the skills needed to address mental health challenges in diverse community settings. By implementing an exchange programme involving 27 EU Member States\, Norway\, and Iceland\, EU-PROMENS fosters collaboration between sectors\, reinforcing the importance of mental health in all policies. \nExperts will present the development and implementation of a cross-sectoral mental health competency framework designed to strengthen collaboration between healthcare\, social services\, education\, and justice sectors; ensure professionals are equipped with the necessary skills to address mental health holistically; improve accessibility and quality of care through interdisciplinary training and knowledge exchange. \nMental health services often operate in silos\, leading to gaps in care and missed opportunities for intervention. This webinar explores how breaking down these barriers through competency-based approaches can promote mental health equity by integrating care across multiple domains; empower practitioners with shared best practices and resources; shape policy recommendations that embed mental health into broader social rights frameworks. \nBy leveraging insights from EU-PROMENS Project\, this event will serve as one more input to the structural reforms\, demonstrating how competency frameworks can be instrumental in improving mental health systems across Europe.

SUMMARY:Making Mental Health Visible: Data as a Tool for Rights
DESCRIPTION:Equitable societies invest in mental health. \nOur dashboards will give an idea of where we stand and where we can improve. \nMental health is shaped by poverty\, unemployment\, inequality\, and the strength of our social protections. Yet across Europe\, these realities are often invisible — and mental health remains underfunded. \n  \nAs part of EU Mental Health Week\, we are launching two new dashboards — designed for ongoing updates to reflect Europe’s evolving mental health landscape: \nOne mapping the prevalence of mental health conditions and the stigma. \nOne tracking policy action\, including investment\, service integration\, and workforce capacity. \n  \nThese tools offer a vital starting point — but they also reveal a critical gap: we urgently need more and more current data to drive real\, rights-based change.\nWithout better data\, there can be no true investment in mental health — and no resilient\, just and inclusive society \nJoin us to explore the evidence\, hear from key voices\, and call for mental health to be recognised and protected as a fundamental social right.\nTogether\, let’s turn data into rights — and rights into reality.

SUMMARY:"Reaching Beyond Rare: Strengthening Mental Health and Wellbeing in Rare Disease Advocacy" Satellite Workshop to EURORDIS Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:On 22 May 2025 in Riga\, EURORDIS and Rareminds will host a peer training workshop titled “Reaching Beyond Rare: Strengthening Mental Health and Wellbeing in Rare Disease Advocacy”\, aligning with this year’s European Mental Health Week theme: Care for mental health\, invest in social rights.\nPeople with rare and undiagnosed conditions often experience stigma\, isolation\, and unequal access to mental health support—issues deeply rooted in broader social and structural inequalities. This workshop recognises that promoting mental health also means addressing these social determinants and empowering communities through peer-led support and inclusion. \nThe event will launch the EURORDIS Mental Health Toolkit – Reaching Beyond Rare\, which offers practical strategies to strengthen mental wellbeing across rare disease communities. Through interactive breakout sessions\, participants will explore ways to build resilience\, enhance peer support\, and foster self-awareness. \nA key focus will be on understanding the effects of social exclusion and gathering good practices that promote participation in society and independent living. These collective insights will help inform future advocacy efforts and support policy recommendations that prioritise mental health and social rights for all.

SUMMARY:The Power of Multidisciplinary Collaboration in Mental Health Services: lessons learned from the European Programme for Mental Health Exchange
\nThis webinar will explore how multidisciplinary collaboration can address societal systemic challenges\, ensuring that mental health services are inclusive\, equitable\, and responsive to the broader social determinants of well-being. Experts\, project partners and participants will share insights from the ongoing Exchange in 6 hubs (Austria\, Croatia\, Czech Republic\, Finland\, Netherlands and Spain)\, showcasing strategies that foster cross-sector cooperation among healthcare providers\, educators\, policymakers\, and social service organizations. The exchanges will continue over the next year and dates will be announced in the webinar and on EU-PROMENS newsletters. \nAs part of European Mental Health Week\, this discussion reinforces the call to invest in social rights and build a stronger\, more resilient European society and networks where mental health is protected and promoted through fair policies and inclusive support systems. By integrating mental health into broader social policies\, and implementing multidisciplinary approach\, we can shift the narrative from an individual-focused approach to one that tackles the root causes of poor mental health.

SUMMARY:Effective Burnout Prevention Solutions for Mental Health at Work
DESCRIPTION:This webinar explores burnout as a systemic issue rooted in the way work is structured —rather than a personal failure to cope. Led by a burnout prevention specialist with lived experience of workplace burnout\, the session will spotlight how employment conditions —such as long hours\, job insecurity\, toxic cultures\, and inequality —deeply affect mental health. \nThrough a mix of expert insight and real-life storytelling\, the event will highlight the urgent need to shift from individual-focused solutions (like self-care or resilience training) to structural interventions that uphold mental health as a social right.\nIt will explore how employers\, unions\, and policymakers can collaborate to implement systemic changes such as healthy work boundaries\, psychological safety policies\, and protections through collective agreements. \nAligned with the EMHW 2025 theme “Care for mental health\, invest in social rights\,” the webinar calls for a broader understanding of burnout that addresses its social and economic roots. It advocates for employment policies that promote mental wellbeing —particularly for vulnerable groups working in precarious or under-resourced environments. \nThe goal is to inspire a new narrative: one where workplace mental health is not treated as a personal burden\, but as a collective responsibility requiring bold\, systemic action. \nRegister for the event

SUMMARY:Brilliant but Burned Out. Mental Health\, Precarity\, and the Future of Research
DESCRIPTION:Mental health among early-career researchers is a growing concern. Numerous studies show that PhD candidates are at high risk of developing issues such as depression\, anxiety\, and burnout (e.g.\, Mattijssen et al.\, 2021). Common causes include excessive workload\, high expectations\, lack of work-life balance\, and deep uncertainty about the future (Levecque\, 2018). Despite growing awareness\, practical prevention strategies and structural support remain limited (Satinsky et al.\, 2021). \nAlthough research and innovation are essential to societal progress\, the role of the researcher remains deeply precarious. Many projects lack stable funding\, and budget cuts in research and development undermine the sovereignty and independence of academic work. Researchers face pressure from the “publish or perish” culture\, limited career prospects\, high mobility demands\, and systemic undervaluation of their contributions — all contributing to psychological distress. \nThis presentation aims to:\n1) Raise mental health awareness among PhD students\, researchers\, and higher education leaders;\n2) Reflect on the working conditions in academia\, including job insecurity\, lack of funding\, and performance pressures;\n3) Encourage discussion about shared responsibility and identify actions that policymakers\, institutions\, and researchers themselves can take to improve working conditions and well-being. \nIn line with the EMHW 2025 theme “Care for mental health\, invest in social rights\,” this session highlights how fair employment\, recognition\, and stable conditions are essential for protecting researchers’ mental health and sustaining the future of academic work. \nRegister now

SUMMARY:Voices from the Ground: Investing in Social Support for Mental Wellness
DESCRIPTION:“Voices from the Ground: Investing in Social Support for Mental Wellness” is a hybrid panel discussion organized by Afya Care Foundation during the European Mental Health Week 2025\, under the theme “Care for mental health\, invest in social rights.” This event seeks to highlight the importance of grassroots efforts and social support systems in promoting mental well-being\, especially in underserved communities across Eastern Africa.\nDrawing from firsthand experiences\, the event will bring together mental health practitioners\, community workers\, youth advocates\, and individuals with lived experience to explore how investing in social rights—such as access to education\, housing\, healthcare\, and protection from discrimination—directly impacts mental health outcomes. Panelists will share practical examples of community-led initiatives\, such as school outreach programs\, mental health awareness campaigns\, and psychosocial support for marginalized groups. \nThe discussion aims to amplify local voices\, encourage international collaboration\, and showcase scalable models of care that bridge the gap between policy and practice. Participants will also engage in dialogue around systemic challenges such as stigma\, poverty\, and limited access to services\, with a focus on sustainable solutions. \nUltimately\, the event aspires to inspire inclusive investment in mental health that centers on dignity\, equity\, and social justice—aligning perfectly with the goals of EMHW 2025.

SUMMARY:Let’s CEE! A Youth-Led Movement for Youth Mental Health in Central and Eastern Europe - Launching Event
DESCRIPTION:Let’s CEE is a regional initiative aiming to spotlight and transform the mental health landscape for young people across Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). During European Mental Health Week 2025\, we are launching the initiative publicly through a dynamic\, youth-led webinar and social media campaign\, bringing together CEE youth advocates\, professionals\, and policymakers.\nThis event will introduce our mission to establish youth mental health hubs in CEE — culturally sensitive\, accessible spaces that provide integrated and stepped mental health support. We’ll highlight the systemic barriers faced by youth in the region\, present our research findings from consultations with young people\, and launch a call for regional collaboration.\nActivities will include a live webinar with youth speakers\, policy-focused breakout sessions\, and the release of a manifesto advocating for social investment in youth mental health. Our goal is to catalyze a regional conversation on sustainable mental health systems rooted in social justice. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Mental Health as a Public and Legal Concern. Beyond the Clinical Gaze. Who Cares?
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will critically explore the concept of mental health and its implications for law and policy. It will begin by examining how “mental health” is commonly understood\, often being conflated with mental illness\, and would trace a paradigm shift from a narrow\, medicalised perspective to one that emphasises prevention and the recognition of structural determinants. Central to this shift are the ICESCR\, which underscores mental health as an essential dimension of the right to health\, and the CRC\, which promotes a pervasive preventive approach to mental health. The CRPD further advances this shift by focusing\, among other things\, on the right to prevent mental health deterioration. \nGiven the shortcomings of current national mental health systems\, which struggle to meet the increasing demand for mental health services\, and the political guidelines set by EC President von der Leyen for 2024 to 2029\, which emphasise the urgent need for preventive mental health strategies and propose a new Action Plan on the European Pillar of Social Rights\, the presentation would advocate for a comprehensive\, rights-based framework. This framework moves away from reactive systems based on treatment and control towards one that promotes prevention by addressing the social determinants of mental health\, in order to create a more social Europe and an environment that supports mental health for all” \nJoin the event\nThe event will include automated subtitles

SUMMARY:From Digital Strain to Digital Strength: Rethinking Burnout Prevention in Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:Burnout among healthcare professionals has reached critical levels across Europe\, driven by chronic workplace stress\, heavy workloads\, and systemic challenges that undermine wellbeing. As health systems struggle to retain and support their workforce\, the question of how to effectively prevent burnout has never been more urgent. \nThis timely webinar\, hosted by EPHA during European Mental Health Week\, will bring together the Chair and Co-Chairs of Working Group 4 (WG4) of the Strategic Partners’ Initiative for Data and Digital Health\, led by WHO/Europe. The session will explore the complex drivers behind burnout in healthcare and highlight why addressing it requires a systemic\, multi-level response. \nThe discussion will focus in particular on the double-edged role of digital technologies: while digital tools can contribute to stress when poorly implemented\, they also hold great potential as part of the solution. Speakers will present WG4’s latest work on how responsible\, data-driven\, and workforce-centered digital innovation can help identify early warning signs\, reduce administrative burden\, and foster healthier work environments. \nJoin EPHA to explore how we can move from digital strain to digital strength\, and create sustainable\, supportive systems for the people who care for us.

SUMMARY:EMHW event at the European Parliament
DESCRIPTION:The EU’s Comprehensive Approach to Mental Health marked a major step in placing mental health on the European agenda\, recognising it as a social\, economic\, and human rights priority. However\, nearly three years on\, progress remains uneven\, with key areas still lacking sustained action and long-term investment. \nAt this critical moment\, this event will bring together Members of the European Parliament\, EU institutions\, and civil society to reflect on what has been achieved and explore what must come next. It will focus on the need for a coordinated\, rights-based EU Mental Health Strategy that prioritises prevention\, inclusion\, and community-based care — because no Member State can face today’s challenges alone. \n

SUMMARY:Between Convictions and Psychiatric Labels: Beliefs\, Polarisation and Mental Health in a Changing Europe
DESCRIPTION:When people argue that rising immigration is part of a deliberate plan by political elites to reshape society and replace existing populations\, it can be difficult to make sense of this belief. Those who hold this view may feel they are simply seeing patterns that others miss\, and their certainty can grow stronger when they find others who seem to confirm it. \nSo\, what kind of belief are we dealing with? Is it an extreme political belief\, shaped by the social world around us? Or is it something closer to a psychiatric delusion? This webinar looks at those difficult cases where the answer is not straightforward. \nExtreme beliefs and psychiatric delusions can look surprisingly similar: held very strongly\, resistant to change even in the face of evidence\, and bound up with fear\, identity\, or a need to make sense of a confusing world. What often makes the difference is that extreme beliefs are shared\, while delusions are usually more idiosyncratic.\nThis is especially relevant in a changing Europe. At a time of polarisation\, mistrust\, and rapid social change\, beliefs do not emerge in a vacuum. They are shaped by social identity\, relationships\, and the wider climate\, which is why the line between shared convictions and pathological beliefs can sometimes seem blurred. \nIn this 30-minute webinar\, Professor Richard Bentall and Dr Almudena Trucharte will explore these cases through an interview-style conversation\, linked to the IN-MIND project (Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action)\, opening a compassionate conversation about the grey area in between. \n  \nRegistration is free and can be completed via the following link: \nhttps://crm.epha.org/civicrm/event/register?reset=1&id=180

SUMMARY:Breathing Through Change: Mental Wellbeing at Work
DESCRIPTION:Breathing Through Change: Mental Wellbeing at Work is a live free online workshop exploring the connection between stress\, breath\, and mental wellbeing in the context of changing work life. \nAs many people across Europe navigate increasing digital demands\, uncertainty\, constant connectivity\, and pressure to perform\, stress can become a persistent background state that affects focus\, emotional regulation\, and overall wellbeing. This session offers an accessible\, evidence-informed introduction to how breathing patterns influence the nervous system\, and how simple breathing practices can support moments of overwhelm\, tension\, and mental fatigue during the workday. \nThe workshop will combine a short educational segment with guided practical exercises that participants can immediately apply in everyday life and work settings. Rather than presenting mental wellbeing as an individual responsibility alone\, the session also opens reflection on how workplace culture\, pace\, and social environments shape how people feel and function. \nThe goal is to offer a practical\, inclusive\, and low-barrier experience that helps participants better understand stress\, feel more connected to their bodies\, and leave with tools they can use in a sustainable way. \nThis event is open to the public and suitable for professionals\, teams\, and anyone interested in accessible approaches to mental wellbeing. \n  \nhttps://www.instagram.com/balance_breathing/ \nhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/balance-breathing

SUMMARY:Voices of youth mental health in Central & Eastern Europe: stronger together
DESCRIPTION:This regional online session brings together youth voices\, practitioners\, mental health advocates\, and organisations from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) to explore how social\, digital\, and structural changes are shaping youth mental health across the region. \nAs part of the broader “Voices of Youth Mental Health in CEE” campaign\, the session will showcase lived experiences\, emerging insights from youth-led storytelling\, and ongoing efforts to redesign mental health services to be more accessible\, community-based\, and person-centred. \n  \nThe event will combine short inputs from youth contributors and regional experts with an interactive discussion across countries. Participants will engage in a cross-country learning exchange\, reflecting on shared challenges such as inequity\, service gaps\, and the pressures faced by young people\, while also showcasing innovative\, community-driven responses from across the region. \n  \nBy centring youth voices\, particularly those with mental health conditions\, and collective experiences\, the session aims to move beyond individualised narratives of mental health and instead foreground the structural conditions shaping wellbeing in CEE.\nThe event is hosted by Let’s CEE\, a regional initiative working to develop youth-friendly\, walk-in mental health services across Central and Eastern Europe through participatory and community-based approaches. \n  \nhttps://lets-cee.com/

SUMMARY:artCEE: a regional call for creative submissions on the topic of ‘Resilience to Me’
DESCRIPTION:artCEE is a regional\, participatory call for action organised by Let’s CEE. We are inviting individuals across Central and Eastern Europe to submit creative works—including photography\, visual art\, and poetry—exploring personal and collective understandings of “Resilience to Me” or what resilience and mental health means to them. Open to all\, the call aims to amplify diverse voices and lived experiences of mental health across the region\, particularly among youth. \nLet’s CEE is a not-for-profit initiative standing up for youth mental health across Central and Eastern Europe. We implemented low-intensity mental health care for youth locally\, and come together as a regional community of practice. \nAs part of artCEE\, all submissions will be showcased online as part of European Mental Health Week\, creating a collective exhibition that reflects the plurality of resilience in changing social\, cultural\, and political contexts. \nThe project positions creative expression as both a reflective tool and a form of advocacy\, highlighting how individuals and communities navigate challenges\, inequality\, and transformation. It also provides a platform for underrepresented voices\, particularly young people\, to contribute to regional mental health narratives. \nWe will accept submissions until 5th May. At this point we will gather all submissions and create a virtual exhibition which will be launched during the Let’s CEE Webinar for European Mental Health Week. We will be hosting further\, in person exhibitions in CEE cities through May and the summer of 2026. \n  \nhttps://lets-cee.com/
