Stronger Together Breaking stigma. Building communities of care

May 9 @ 17 h 00 min - 19 h 00 min

Stronger Together: Breaking Stigma, Building Communities of Care An Online Mental Health Awareness Event | European Mental Health Week 2026

There is an Igbo adage ‘Onye aghala nwanne ya’; that means: Be your brother’s keeper. It is a call to collective responsibility, and it is the spirit behind this event.

Mental health remains one of the most unspoken struggles in African diaspora communities. Stigma, misconceptions, and a culture of “hustling alone” mean that too many people are carrying invisible weight in silence. This has to change, and change begins with these kinds of conversations with each other.

Organised as part of European Mental Health Week, this online event brings together three diaspora organizations and more, to create a culturally safe, inclusive space where mental health can be spoken about openly, honestly, and without shame. Together, we will explore how cultural, social, and environmental factors shape our mental wellbeing, and how, as a community, we can move from isolation to solidarity.

Through facilitated discussions and shared insights, participants will examine what community care truly looks like in practice: the power of support, approaches to mental wellness, and how we collectively dismantle the lonely hustle culture that leaves too many of us walking alone.

This is not just an awareness event. It is an invitation to build something, communities where no one, regardless of their struggle, is ever left behind.
