“Voices from the Ground: Investing in Social Support for Mental Wellness” is a hybrid panel discussion organized by Afya Care Foundation during the European Mental Health Week 2025, under the theme “Care for mental health, invest in social rights.” This event seeks to highlight the importance of grassroots efforts and social support systems in promoting mental well-being, especially in underserved communities across Eastern Africa.
Drawing from firsthand experiences, the event will bring together mental health practitioners, community workers, youth advocates, and individuals with lived experience to explore how investing in social rights—such as access to education, housing, healthcare, and protection from discrimination—directly impacts mental health outcomes. Panelists will share practical examples of community-led initiatives, such as school outreach programs, mental health awareness campaigns, and psychosocial support for marginalized groups.
The discussion aims to amplify local voices, encourage international collaboration, and showcase scalable models of care that bridge the gap between policy and practice. Participants will also engage in dialogue around systemic challenges such as stigma, poverty, and limited access to services, with a focus on sustainable solutions.
Ultimately, the event aspires to inspire inclusive investment in mental health that centers on dignity, equity, and social justice—aligning perfectly with the goals of EMHW 2025.
