PERISCOPE MOOC ‘Strengthening territorial response for better health’ launched on Coursera

Mental Health Europe is pleased to announce the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) ‘Strengthening territorial response for better health’ developed under the PERISCOPE project is now available on Coursera.

PERISCOPE is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme. The project looks at the wide socio-economic and behavioural effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and aims to make Europe more resilient and prepared for future large-scale risks.

This MOOC was developed together with the European Regional and Local Health Authorities (EUREGHA) and Agència de Qualitat i Avaluació Sanitàries de Catalunya (AQuAS), as part of the research project ‘Pan-European Response to the Impacts of the COVID-19 and future Pandemics and Epidemics’.

This Coursera MOOC is free of charge, consists of 12 online recorded lectures and is structured in a self-paced learning modality that is easily adaptable to own schedules.

The course includes highly engaging lessons in which theoretical aspects and practical cases are mixed, listening to the voices and experiences of experts and regional representatives, on four topics that proved to be critical during the COVID-19 pandemic: procurement lines, digital transformation, cross-border cooperation, and mental health.

The 4th module ‘Ending stigma and improving mental health’ offers the opportunity to hear directly from experts on the harmful effects of stigma on mental health, with a particular eye on the relevant policy interventions and implementations necessary to improve the current situation.  The training provides an overview of mental health, followed by an outline of the complexities of mental health and stigmatisation.

The training also clarifies why people can unintentionally reinforce negative stereotypes and be stigmatizing because of the language they use when discussing mental health. The following section is delivered by mental health experts and offers the opportunity to hear directly from experts by experience on the harmful effects of stigma on mental health. The concluding portion of the module addresses the relevant policy interventions and implementations necessary to make such changes a reality.

The lecturers of this module are Claudia Marinetti (MHE Director), Laura Marchetti (MHE Policy Manager), Fatima Awil (MHE Policy and Knowledge Officer), Dominique de Marné (MHE Senior Policy Advisor on Youth), and Oliver Cullen (Mental Health Ireland, Mental Health Expert).

One does not need to be an expert in healthcare and public health to take part in this MOOC.
