SONAR-Cities

Sonar-Cities is funded under Horizon Europe’s Disaster-Resilient Societies cluster. The project aims to enhance the resilience of European cities in the face of health emergencies and disasters by promoting the inclusion of marginalized or excluded populations in preparedness and response efforts. Through the co-development of tools with at-risk communities, frontline responders, and local authorities, the initiative seeks to mitigate both the immediate and long-term health consequences of such crises.

The SONAR-Cities project goal is to render Europe’s cities more resilient in health emergencies and disasters through the development and implementation of community-based adapted tools for people facing vulnerabilities – at risk of being marginalised or excluded because of low income, gender, age, ethnicized or racialised identity, chronic illness, disability – who may suffer adverse health consequences as a result.

The approach adopted through the SONAR-Project analyses past disasters and health emergencies across six European cities (Groningen, Ljubljana, Stockholm, Udine, Vienna, Zagreb) through transdisciplinary social science research and at-risk population perspectives. A co-creation process involving at-risk public, first responders, and authorities will develop an inclusive, citizen-centered toolset.
