Mental Health Literacy for Higher Education Teachers

This session explores mental health literacy and how it can support both students and educators in higher education settings. It will focus on helping teaching staff recognise early signs of distress, understand key factors affecting mental health, and respond with empathy and appropriate support.

Rather than turning educators into mental health professionals, the session aims to provide practical, first-line skills — including creating safe and inclusive learning environments, communicating effectively, and knowing when and how to refer students to specialised services.

The session will also highlight the importance of supporting educators’ own mental well-being, promoting healthier and more supportive academic environments for all.
