Better Together: Co-creating the Future of Mental Health

About the Week

Mental Health Europe is the home of the European Mental Health Week – a pan-European initiative that takes place every year in May – the largest opportunity for the whole of Europe to come together and focus on positive change for mental health.

This week-long event is an opportunity for individuals from all over Europe and beyond to engage in discussions about various aspects of mental health, share personal stories of coping with challenges during times of crisis and in general, emphasise the need for action to combat stigma, discrimination, and exclusion, and champion good mental health for everyone.

Every May, European Mental Health Week brings together a diverse array of participants from across Europe, including young people, families, caregivers, mental health advocates, representatives from both the private and public sectors, our members, care professionals, human rights experts, EU-level policymakers, national governments, and numerous other supporters who rally behind this annual event.

About European Mental Health Week

Better Together: Co-Creating the Future of Mental Health

The theme of European Mental Health Week 2024 is “Better Together: Co-creating the Future of Mental Health”.

  • Co-creation means different people working together towards one purpose: better mental health for all.
  • The knowledge of people with lived experience, their supporters, professionals, and decision makers is valued equally.
  • The best actions in mental health are about people’s real needs. That’s why people’s voices matter
  • Co-creation inspires responsibility, trust, power, and shared accountability.
  • Let’s promote positive mental health, design paths to recovery, and improve mental health care and social inclusion together, with the meaningful involvement of each of us.
  • The easiest form of co-creation is working with those around you!  If you and your community were to be involved in decisions regarding mental health initiatives, what would you prioritise and how?
  • This year’s #EuropeanMentalHealthWeek is about making co-creation a reality.
  • Doing with is better than doing for. We are #BetterTogether.

Should you get involved?

If you care about mental health, or are involved in health and social policy or practices, or if you have a role in the media, then yes! This is an opportunity for you to share, learn, and educate, and to demonstrate your commitment to mental health.

The European Mental Health Week is also an opportunity to change the narrative surrounding mental health. Experiencing mental health issues is human, and shaped by the socio-economic-cultural context we live in.

By engaging in the EMHW, you become part of a European movement that wants to support reliable, fact-checked and accessible mental health information that supports individuals’ autonomy and promotes structural change to combat stigma and discrimination.
